Barry shares his prostate cancer journey

Icon Writers

Each year, more than 4000 New Zealand men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Just behind skin cancer, it is one of the most diagnosed cancers in the country.

When Lower Hutt resident, Barry was diagnosed with the disease in his early 70s, he admits that it didn’t come as a big shock.

“Given my age and the incidence of prostate cancer in older men, my diagnosis wasn’t a total surprise to me or my family,” says Barry.

“I felt anxious and worried. I wanted to find out further information and to take action as soon as possible.

“My family were and continue to be, very supportive and reassuring.”

Barry was diagnosed with prostate cancer in October 2022 following his annual health check-up, which revealed an increased PSA level in his blood count.

“I was experiencing some difficulty in urinating frequency and flow, and reduced sex drive,” says Barry.

Barry’s treatment included a robotic assisted prostatectomy at Wakefield Hospital in March 2023, followed by ongoing Goserelin treatment and 33 session of radiation therapy at Bowen Icon Cancer Centre in early 2024 under the care of radiation oncologist, Dr Douglas Lupati.

Despite the significant challenges of a cancer diagnosis and treatment, Barry says he has fond memories of his time at Bowen Icon Cancer Centre.

“Everyone I encountered at the Centre was very professional and precise, and displayed a positive and caring attitude. They made me feel comfortable and provided helpful advice,” says Barry.
